‘China and the US: Long-term Challenges and Current Policy Priorities’ with Dr. Mary E. Lovely (Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute and Professor of Economics and Melvin A. Eggers Faculty Scholar at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs)

As China continues expanding influence on and command of the global economy, it’s overtaking of the United States as the dominant player is now a ‘when’ and not an ‘if’ scenario. Providing critical analysis of the challenges facing Beijing and Washington, Dr. Lovely addresses the consequential relationship between the two states and what should be expected and prioritized moving forward. With global implications across various sectors, she will discuss the unique diplomatic challenges facing the new Biden administration.

About our speaker:
Dr. Mary E. Lovely is a Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute and Professor of Economics and Melvin A. Eggers Faculty Scholar at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Her academic work focuses on the effects of China’s reform and opening on its firms and workers and on the global economy. At the Peterson Institute, she writes about trade policy, global value chains, and foreign direct investment. She has published essays and opinion pieces in the New York Times, the Financial Times, CNN.com, and the Milken Review. She has been quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, NPR, Marketplace, Bloomberg, Politico, Axios, and various international publications. Lovely earned her PhD in economics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Harvard University. Read more here.
