6/3 NEC Webinar: ‘Economic and Fiscal Impacts of Immigration’ with Pia Orrenius, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas

June 3, 2021 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

‘Economic and Fiscal Impacts of Immigration’ with Pia M. Orrenius, Vice President and Senior Economist, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas Date: Thursday, June 3 Time: 12pm to 1pm EST The United States is the world’s largest economy and top migrant destination, but immigration is slowing and the native workforce is aging. Decelerating labor force growth implies weaker output, however immigration reform could both boost participation among existing immigrants and bring in more, fueling the economy. Dr. Orrenius, who served as senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisors, will examine these trends as well as policy impacts on native workers and taxpayers. REGISTRATION IS OPEN! Registration will remain open until 11am, Thursday, June 3, 2021. You should receive a confirmation email after registering but the link to the webinar will come in a separate email on the morning of the event.  If you do not receive a confirmation email or the event link by 11am the day of the event, please contact the NEC for that or any other questions at manager@national-economists.org. About our speaker: Dr. Pia M. Orrenius is Vice President and Senior Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. From 2004-2005, she served as senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President, where she advised the Bush administration on labor, health, and immigration issues. Her academic research focuses on the labor market impacts of immigration, unauthorized immigration, and U.S. immigration policy. Dr. Orrenius manages the regional and microeconomics group in the Dallas Fed Research Department, tracking regional economic growth and demographic change. She is executive editor of the quarterly publication Southwest Economy, co-edited Ten Gallon Economy: Sizing up Economic Growth in Texas, and coauthored the book Beside the Golden Door: U.S. Immigration Reform in a New Era of Globalization. Dr. Orrenius holds a PhD in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and bachelor degrees in economics and Spanish from the University of Illinois at Urbana—Champaign.
