Please join us for a joint webinar with the National Association of Business Economics on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at 6pm EST. Speaker: Motoshige Itoh, Professor, Faculty of International Social Sciences, Gakushuin University; Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo Moderator: Emily Sanchez, President, National Economists Club; Director, Economics & Data Analytics, American Chemistry Council The COVID-19 pandemic not only had a serious impact on the Japanese economy, but also opened up new possibilities for future growth. The next driving forces of growth, “green” and “digital”, will need structural changes and investments and the importance of international cooperation for these movements is increasing. This webinar will provide an opportunity to hear from a Japanese scholarly expert, Motoshige Itoh, about the following topics:
  • The macroeconomic policy challenges of SUGANOMICS
  • New possibilities in Japan post-COVID pandemic which will increase potential growth (Digitalization, Green Economy, etc.)
  • The importance of a deepened economic coordination between the US and Japan under the new administration

Speaker/Moderator Bios: Motoshige Itoh has been Professor of the Faculty of International Social Sciences, Gakushuin University since April 2016 and Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo since June 2016, after serving the Dean of Department of Economics, University of Tokyo in 2007-2009. Over his career, he has contributed to economic research, especially in international economics and public policy making at the Government of Japan. He was a member of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, one of the Prime Minister’s advisory bodies in Japan, for six years since 2013. He has also held such distinguished positions as Chairman of the Reconstruction Promotion Council, Member of the Social Security System Reform Conference, and Chairman of the Expert Council at the Fair Trade Commission, among others. Emily Sanchez currently serves the National Economists Club as President. She has previously supported the NEC as Vice President of Programs. Emily is an Economist and Director of Data Analytics at the American Chemistry Council where she uses data analytics and economic analysis to make sense of the chemical industry, end-use industries, global trade, and distribution and logistics issues. Her training is in statistics and economics. Emily also has extensive experience in developing and managing surveys, metrics programs and benchmarking studies. A Virginia native, she holds a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Statistics from James Madison University and an M.S. in Applied Statistics and an M.A. in Economics from George Mason University.
